CHARITIES CORNER, May 2011 – by Barbara A. Ford, Charity Co-ordinator
AD HOC VETTING TEAM
Over the next few months CAM will be vetting Charities for the fiscal year 2011. I currently have 3 members of the Vetting Team and would like at least another 2 persons. This consists of one meeting of the team, e-mail correspondence and 2 days to visit the charities. If you are interested in becoming a member of the team, please contact Barbara A. Ford, Charity Co-ordinator CAM at bafordkl@yahoo.ca or call at 012-655-1600. Looking forward to having you on our team – it’s a lot of fun.
CHARITIES
Anyone who knows of a charity that they would suggest for CAM’s support in 2011, please forward the name and contact numbers to: Barbara A. Ford, Charity Co-ordinator, bafordkl@yahoo.ca or call at 012-655-1600.
The Vetting Team will put together information on the Charity, review and visit. The basic standards for Vetting are: Must have a Register of Societies registered number; must have a Charitable Deduction registered number from Inland Revenue. If a charity has these numbers, then the Charity will be considered for CAM support.
2010
During the fiscal year 2010, the surplus funds from CAM member events went to support 4 charities, namely: Persatuan Kanak-kanak Istimewa Ampang or Special Children of Ampang; Pusat Kebajikan Good Shepherd; Women’s Aid Organization; and the SPCA. Each newsletter I will be highlighting one of these Charities.
PERSATUAN KANAK-KANAK ISTIMEWA AMPANG – SPECIAL CHILDREN OF AMPANG
Special Children is a day-home for 60 children and adults, aged 4 to 34 years, who have varying disabilities: Down syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, slow learners, amongst others. Managed by a parent steering committee, their aim is to provide an education which will enable these children and adults to live as an integral part of society. Started from a need for their own children’s welfare, they have come a long way in providing a wonderful care facility which is not available within the Malaysian system. It’s a home with real programs that meet the needs of its children and adults. In 2010, CAM is purchasing the following equipment for their physiotherapy room in their new home: adjustable parallel bars; marina/shoulder wheel; exercise trampoline; fun tunnel; wall target panel; and adjustable tilt table.

- PUSAT KEBAJIKAN GOOD SHEPHERD
Good Shepherd has been helping women and children through a variety of programmes in Malaysia for the past 50 years. All their programmes are directed toward the route causes of problems associated with poverty and lack of education amongst women. Their aim is to help women in need or distress, become independent and in turn help their children to better themselves through education. In 2010, CAM is sponsoring 8 children from the rural villages in Sabah to live at the Asrama Desa Pukak Hostel during the week. Run jointly by Good Shepherd and the villagers, these children from impoverished homes, would otherwise have to walk 2 to 4 hours a day to and from their villages to attend school.
CAM is also sponsoring 6 girls to live at the AGSJ Secondary School Hostel in Sabah, which is run by Good Shepherd. These girls are from secondary poor families who need assistance to attend school. Both these programmes instill life skills and values into the daily lives of these children.

- WOMEN’S AID ORGANISATION
WAO was established over 28 years ago. They provided the first home for battered women and their children in Malaysia. They run a Sanctuary which houses women and children who have left their homes, providing social assistance, mentoring, counseling and other services which assist these women in the short-term. In addition they run a Hot Line for battered women on a 24 hrs. basis. They are one of the leading Advocacy groups for women and have a WAO Centre which is an administrative, education and advocacy centre. WAO runs a Care Centre for the ex-resident women who need help housing and caring for their children. They also have an outreach program for ex-residents. They do an outstanding job and CAM is assisting in contributing to their General Operating Budget in 2010.

- SPCA – SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TOWARD ANIMALS
Although most of the surplus funds from CAM member events goes to human beings, we have not forgotten our four legged friends and it is said “that how a country treats these creatures shows its humanity and its soul”.
The SPCA is world renowned and especially the SPCA in Malaysia has come a long way over the years, in taking in stray, neglected, abandoned or cruelly inflicted dogs and cats. They have vaccinated them, fed the, neutered them, tried to find loving homes and cared. They have also been effective in educating Malaysian’s on how to love and care for animals and effective as one of the major advocacy groups for animals. They have finally been given title tot their land and are in the process of building a new facility to house all these unfortunate dogs and cats. In 2010, CAM will be purchasing a Kennel for Dogs at the new building, which will be named after CAM.
